Affilorama Training – Keyword Fundamentals

Published in Ask Mark

This is another great Affilorama Training video from Mark Ling at Affilorama. It really does amaze me how much stuff Mark gives away for free.

Of course, it also proves what great quality courses like AffiloBlueprint must be when you think that if this is the free stuff, the paid Affilorama Training must be bloody brilliant.
Watch the video below to find out the answers to two questions answered by an affiliate marketer.

If you don’t have a good connection or are at work, I have included the most important parts below the video.

First Question

How many searches should a keyword have a month for it to be viable?

To answer this, it is important to think about what you are searching for? Is it…?

  • a product key word
  • a crisis keyword
  • run-of-the-mill keyword

This is important because Google is not great at collecting data for low-level very specific keywords like ‘Dave’s Dog Training Course’.

However, brand keywords work differently because the brand itself can be very profitable. Even though you may only get 10 visits a day, you may well get a sale every other day if it is a well-known and sought after brand.

Crisis keywords, for example, ‘stop dogs barking’ or ‘cure my baldness’ need about 1,000 to 1,500 searches per month in Google to be considered viable.

Finally, ‘normal’ keywords, for example, ‘marriage tips’ or ‘good hair care’ should have minimum of about 1,500 to 2,000 searches per month to be viable.

Second Question

How much traffic and competing pages should I be concerned with if I pick two to three keywords on a niche site?

The traffic itself is not particularly important but if you want to look at anything, it’s worth checking backlinks. Use Yahoo rather than Google for this as Yahoo is more accurate.

If the top 10 sites have 500 backlinks or more and there are not many sites with under 50 backlinks, then the keywords may be too competitive.

Otherwise, you will probably have a good chance of ranking quite well.
